Litter Training Kittens?

I have two cats. Both are 7 weeks old. I can't seem to litter train them however. I've tried almost everything; I even tried training mats! (they just go right NEXT to the mats, not on them!) Whenever i bring one of them to the litter box and place him inside, he quickly jumps out and runs off, as if he's afraid. And their ruining my carpet! What do i do?
